“NLP is an attitude and a methodology that leaves behind a trail of techniques.”
– Richard Bandler
“NLP is the study of human excellence.”
– John Grinder
NLP, also referred to as neuro-linguistic programming, has carried with it a mysterious connotation left to mostly stage magicians, salesman, and politicians in their exploits of verbal alacrity. In reality, it is difficult to define what specifically is NLP, just as it is difficult to define what is or is not hypnosis – if you can go inside and imagine yourself asking these questions aloud in seeing and hearing your own personal answers popping up directly in front of you, that you may grasp the understanding that words create representations within our minds. NLP could be defined as A higher awareness in terms of the way that communication actually functions.
This is well explained by Richard Bandler’s expression:
The meaning of your communication is the response that you get…
NLP is based upon modeling behavior. In most cases, successful behavior for the behavior that generates successful outcomes within a specific context is what is model but the field in LP has expanded to include various elements and techniques in addition to the beliefs and attitudes.
NLP most certainly works on people. All communication is based on the premise of creating an internal representation of words that conveys meaning and creates action or response. When I hear the question does NLP actually work, usually the context is that of using NLP techniques on other people in order to get your way. NLP can be used to create more appealing or more aversive behavior within a listener, however it is not going to override an intelligent communicators way of thinking.
These are not the droids you’re looking for…
NLP does have that Star Wars / Jedi appeal to it for individuals were looking for power and hoping to use “NLP mind control techniques…” Now power isn’t necessarily a bad thing because achieving goals and creating a life that is meaningful requires personal power. NLP is based upon modeling excellence within a specific context. If someone says that NLP is psychology or therapy, this is not entirely accurate in the sense that NLP is a model of subjective experience and while these understands may help people work through personal problems or reframe problems, it is still nothing more than the skilled use of language. In fact, NLP relies upon the use of many linguistics fallacies that the average person is unaware of… There is certainly the Derren Brown sort of NLP stage magic and illusion and misdirection combined with hypnotism. This sort of showmanship has a high wow factor and it also leads to people feeling attracted to the powerful “dark side” of NLP. Another famous person within self-help circles who has helped make NLP famous is Tony Robbins – the self-proclaimed coach to the stars.
NLP is an acronym for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, which is heavily based upon hypnosis models. Richard Bandler and John Grinder, the two co-founders of NLP applied the communication models of the therapist Milton Erickson and found that it created a framework for personal improvement that was both specific and ambiguous. Specific in the sense that the meta-model allows for communication in a linear, logical manner for the conscious mind, and ambiguous in the sense that the Milton model allows for generalized and associative communication that works well with the subconscious mind.
